Recovering phosphorus from municipal sewage sludge ash.
The first-of-a-kind phosphate recycling facility in Moerdijk, the Netherlands.
Discover the Phoenix projectS&S Feniks, a joint venture between SusPhos BV, a pioneering circular chemistry company, and NV Slibverwerking Noord-Brabant, Europe's largest municipal sewage sludge mono-incinerator, is building a first-of-its-kind facility in Moerdijk, the Netherlands. The facility will recover phosphorus from municipal sewage sludge ash and transform it into valuable, market-ready products.
Why it matters
The Feniks plant will use Sewage Sludge Ash (SSA), a waste stream generated by the SNB incinerator, as feedstock to produce two commercially viable and sustainable products: Phoenix Bond®, a cement replacer, and Phoenix SSPlus®, a phosphate fertilizer.
This zero-waste process addresses several strategic priorities for the EU:
- Reducing CO₂ emissions by replacing cement derived from virgin limestone with Phoenix Bond®
- Recycling phosphorus from SSA, rather than merely recovering it
- Reducing Europe's dependence on imports of critical raw materials from third countries
- Strengthening European economic resilience by creating local production capacity for sustainable phosphate fertilizer through Phoenix SSPlus®, thereby reducing exposure to market price fluctuations
